Today is Saturday, October 12. The Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement is today. This is the holiest day of the year in the Jewish faith. It’s a time for repentance, prayer, and fasting, and observances include refraining from work and eating and drinking from sundown to sundown. Today Hindus observe Dussehra, the anniversary of the day when Rama killed the evil demon Ravana. Monday, October 14 is Indigenous People’s day (Also Columbus Day) which celebrates and honors Native American history and culture. Thursday, October 17 is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This day is a call to action for the eradication of poverty and destitution worldwide. Thurday is also the start of Sukkot, the week-long “Feast of Booths” commemorates the 40-year wandering of the Israelites in the desert on the way
to the Promised Land. We are still in National Hispanic Heritage month until October 15. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The month is dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer and funding for the prevention, earlier detection, and more effective treatment.
