EVENTS:

Here is what is going on in the Rochester area:

1. Dr. Frederick Jefferson invites you to join the MK Gandhi Center for Nonviolence for a four-week online book group, centered on Roxy Manning’s How to Have Antiracist Conversations: Embracing Our Full Humanity to Challenge White Supremacy. Meetings take place on Mondays, October 23 through November 13, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Learn more and register to attend.

2. George Yeodan shares a program from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health “Covering race and racism: A view from the newsroom” on October 24 at 1pm ET. See registration at the file below.

NEWS, HISTORY & RESOURCES:

3.. We repeat a message Dr. Frederick and June Jefferson wrote that reminds us of what can be most important as we react to the Hamas attack on Israel and Israeli response. It is titled “Hate and Catastrosphic Hurt”.

4. We repeat this item one last time. Have you read Shaun Nelms new book, “Leading With Purpose: Empowering Others to Create Lasting Change” https://a.co/d/iLAhkP1 ? It is written by an educator for educators and administrators but it provides great insights on how to fix what we often see as a broken system. I recommend to all that ask “what can be done?”

5. George Yeodan shares a link to a recording of a program presenting by the Mellon Foundation “Civic Engagement and the Determined Hope for the Humanities”.

7. One article is provided below from this week’s Beacon; “What’s next for the Inner Loop North”. The city of Rochester is starting the design phase of the Inner Loop North Transformation Project. The project will fill in a 1.5-mile stretch of the expressway, reconnecting downtown Rochester with the Public Market and the city’s Brown Square, High Falls, Upper Falls and Marketview Heights neighborhoods, and providing land for redevelopment.

8. We share an item from the latest edition of the CNN Newsletter Race Deconstructed this week:

The spookiest story about racism you’ll ever hear

a. How can we defuse conflict on the streets? (Much of the violence on our streets we attribute to race but we learn in this article that it is personal).
