Update Week of 7/17/2022

Immediately below are the items I sent via email this morning.

Many activities going on this week that we need to share with you.

A number of you joined Frank Staropoli and I at the  “Clarissa Uprooted”  multimedia exhibit held at the RIT downtown campus City Art Space.  First floor direct entrance opposite the Liberty Pole. You still can visit through July 24.   Check available dates here:  calendly.comhttps://calendly.com/teenempowerment/clarissa-uprooted-group-visit-conversation?month=2022-07.  we encourage you to visit the exhibit on your own – details here:  “Clarissa Uprooted””

Many of you ask “how did Rochester become one of the poorest cities in the U.S.?” The answer is found in the stories behind Clarissa Street and other neighborhoods that have been altered or neglected. There is an exhibit that we suggest you visit, “Clarissa Street, The Legacy” open from 6 – 9 PM daily through July 28. See attachment for details.

A young leader in our community, Grequan Carter is hosting a big community event called HealingROC. It will take place Sunday, July 24th, 2022 from 2-6pm at Maplewood Rose Garden, he will gather individuals in the police department, as well as residents and businesses of Rochester, and participate in a peace walk to attempt to decrease tension between our community and police. This will also showcase some form of progress/healing and honorment of and since the Rochester Race Riot/Uprising that took place July 24th, 1964. From the Rose Garden, we will walk through Lower Falls, then up St. Paul street, back to the Rose Garden. Please consider joining (see attachment for details).

Last week, I missed sharing Nanette Massey’s latest internet webinar, “White Progressives, Daily Damage”. It is available today at 3:00 PM EDT. Please tune in.

Jerome Underwood, President/CEO, Action for a Better Community, Rochester has agreed to speak to a special session of all ERG participants and alumni, Thursday, August 4 from 4:00 – 5:30 PM. The presentation will be live at the RTS headquarters at 1372 East Main StreetRochester, New York and accessible via Zoom. More information and a meeting invite will be coming later this week.

Not included in today’s email was an item provided by Nanette Massey from the NABJ Black News and Views publication on the Buffalo Tops Reopening Ceremony:

Richard Glaser shared this piece from Wikipedia regarding a successful graduate from a Historically Black College and University, Gregory L. Robinson is an American engineer and the current director of the James Webb Space Telescope Program at NASA. “Gregory L. Robinson – Wikipedia” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_L._Robinson

Bill Wynne provides an email (attached) with information on programs he recommends. “All: amazingly this story of reconciliation began in 1968 on the day of the MLK assassination … incredible demonstration of possibilities today! Another plug: I highly recommend the Race Talk Revolution program usually broadcast live on Wednesday’s at noon … great speakers and discussion and the next one will be about this documentary film on 7/27.”
