1.  Consider sponsoring and/or attending UJIMA’s A Time for Healing, Educating and Rebuilding Conference:  “Exploring Trauma of Community Violence, Strategies for Healing”, October 28 & 29 at the Frederick Douglas Family Initiative center, 140 East Main St., Rochester. 2. Our friend, Nanette Massey has pulled together an outstanding event with Robin D’Angelo on Saturday, November 5 at Canisius College titled “Real Conversation about Race”. See the attached flyer.

3. I learned of five (5) programs of interest appearing on WXXI TV (PBS) this month. The 1st, “Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom” (this afternoon, 10/8 @ 4:00 PM), the 2nd, “Rediscovering Frederick Douglas” (tomorrow, 10/9 @ 5:30 PM), the 3rd, Making of Black America – Through the Grapevine “Building Black America” Pt. 1 of 4 (Monday, 10/10 @ 12:00 AM), the 4th, Making of Black America – Through the Grapevine “The Work of the Imagination”, Pt. 2 of 4 (Tuesday, 10/11 @ 9:00 PM) and the 5th, “Becoming Frederick Douglas” (Tuesday, 10/11 @ 10:00 PM). There are other days and times these programs are broadcast during the month, see the attached program listing.

5. I urge you to learn about this African-American cemetery, Midland found at the link below. A friend sent it to me last week and it provides great insight to the treatment of African-Americans throughout our country’s history through this one community’s story. 8. Fred Beer  saw this documentary and was very moved by it. A Veteran’s Islamophobia Transformed, in “Stranger at the Gate” | The New Yorker In short a guy who goes to a mosque to blow it up and ends up becoming a member of the community. A powerful story of overcoming hate.
