The Black National Anthem

Have you ever been at an event where the “Black National Anthem” is sung and you couldn’t sing along because you didn’t know the words? You will find the words below.

‘Lift Every Voice and Sing” lyrics by James Weldon Johnson, and music written by his brother J. Rosamond Johnson, composed in 1900 in celebration of the birthday of the late President, Abraham Lincoln. The hymn was later promoted by the NAACP as ‘the Black national anthem’ and it was widely used as a rallying cry during the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 60s.
